Rainy-Season Garden Care: A Checklist

2 October 2026 · 3 min read

The rainy season is when trees and lawns grow fastest all year. With frequent rain and moist soil, grass turns lush green in no time—but too much moisture brings its own problems, from fast-growing grass and weeds to soil fungus and standing water that can rot roots.

Good rainy-season garden care doesn't take a lot of effort, but it does need to be done at the right time and consistently. This article brings together a checklist and tips for handling the most common problems, so your garden stays beautiful all season long.

Why Gardens Need Extra Care in the Rainy Season

High humidity makes grass, weeds and plant diseases all grow at once. Leave things for just a few weeks and a once-tidy garden can become overgrown and hard to manage. On top of that, soil that holds water for too long can starve tree roots of air and cause them to rot.

Rainy-Season Garden and Lawn Checklist

1. Mow More Often Than Usual

Grass grows very fast in the rainy season. Instead of mowing once a month, you may need to do it every 2–3 weeks. Mow when the grass is only slightly damp—not soaking wet—because wet grass clumps on the blades and leaves an uneven cut.

2. Don't Cut the Grass Too Short

In the rainy season, leave the grass at a reasonable height so the roots stay strong and weeds have a harder time taking hold. Cutting so short that you can see the soil makes it easy for weeds to move in.

3. Remove Weeds Early

Weeds love moist soil. Pull or remove them as soon as you spot them, before they flower and scatter seeds across the whole lawn.

4. Deal With Standing Water

Watch for spots where water pools after rain. If you find any, adjust the drainage channels or add soil to create a slight slope, so tree roots don't sit in water for too long.

5. Watch for Fungus and Plant Disease

Leaves with spots, mould or unusual yellowing are signs of built-up moisture. Trim off diseased leaves and clear fallen leaf litter away from the base of the plant to keep it open and airy.

6. Prune Branches at Risk of Breaking

Strong wind and rain can snap large branches, causing damage or danger. Trim back long, dead, or power-line-crossing branches before a storm hits.

7. Clear Fallen Leaves Regularly

Piles of wet leaves become breeding grounds for fungus and mosquitoes. Clearing them often keeps the garden clean and reduces problems in the long run.

Common Rainy-Season Problems

  • Fast-growing grass that gets out of hand because it grows quicker than usual
  • Weeds everywhere competing for nutrients and spoiling the look of the lawn
  • Root rot and standing water from soil that holds water too long
  • Fungus and plant disease from built-up moisture
  • Branches broken by wind and rain, posing risks to property and safety

If you can't keep up on your own—especially with a large property or big trees—having a professional team step in saves time and is safer.
